Bearing Cage Materials and Types: Comparison of Advantages and Disadvantages of Copper, Steel and Nylon Cages
The cage is an easily overlooked core component in the bearing, whose main functions are to separate rolling elements, reduce collision friction and guide the operation of rolling elements. Its material and type directly affect the bearing's speed, noise, high temperature resistance and service life. The most commonly used cages for industrial bearings are three categories: nylon cages, steel cages and copper cages. The three have very different performance and completely different adaptation scenarios. This article makes a comprehensive comparison of their advantages and disadvantages to help you make precise selection.

Nylon Cages (Engineering Plastic Cages): First Choice for High Speed and Low Noise

Main Material: Reinforced nylon 66 (with glass fiber and high temperature resistant modification), injection molded, extremely light in weight.
Core Advantages: Excellent self-lubricating performance, small friction coefficient, extremely low operation noise; light weight, small inertia, limit speed far exceeding metal cages, suitable for high-speed scenarios; good toughness, impact and vibration resistance, not easy to break; low processing cost and high cost performance.
Obvious Disadvantages: Poor high temperature resistance, the long-term service temperature of conventional nylon cages does not exceed 120℃, and they are prone to deformation and softening failure at excessive temperature; general corrosion resistance, easy to be eroded by oil and chemical media; weak rigidity, easy to deform in heavy-load scenarios.
Applicable Scenarios: High-speed motors, fans, water pumps, electric tools, low-noise equipment, household and industrial light-load transmission equipment, focusing on high-speed, low-noise and light-load scenarios.

Steel Cages (Carbon Steel/Bearing Steel Cages): Main Force for Heavy Load and Impact Resistance

Main Material: High-quality carbon steel and bearing steel, stamping or turning formed, with high strength and sufficient rigidity.
Core Advantages: High mechanical strength, excellent rigidity, extremely strong deformation, impact and tensile resistance; excellent high temperature resistance, long-term service temperature up to 300℃, suitable for high-temperature working conditions; good chemical corrosion and oil aging resistance, strong stability; large load-carrying capacity, suitable for heavy-load scenarios.
Obvious Disadvantages: Heavy weight, large operation inertia, limit speed lower than nylon cages; no self-lubricating property, relatively high friction coefficient, slightly large operation noise; processing cost higher than nylon cages, general precision of stamped steel cages.
Applicable Scenarios: Heavy machinery, rolling mills, crushers, mining equipment, high-temperature fans, reducers and other heavy-load, high-temperature and strong impact scenarios.

Copper Cages (Brass/Bronze Cages): High-End Precision Type

Main Material: Brass and tin bronze, turning formed with extremely high precision, belonging to high-end cage materials.
Core Advantages: Excellent wear resistance and self-lubricating performance, small friction loss; high temperature resistance better than nylon cages, up to 250℃; high dimensional accuracy, stable operation and small vibration; good corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity, can dissipate heat quickly; moderate rigidity, not easy to deform, long service life.
Obvious Disadvantages: High raw material cost, complex processing technology, selling price much higher than nylon and steel cages; relatively heavy weight, limit speed slightly lower than nylon cages; slightly high brittleness, easy to crack in strong impact scenarios.
Applicable Scenarios: Precision machine tool spindles, high-speed precision motors, high-end reducers, high-temperature precision equipment, and scenarios with high requirements for low vibration.
